How do we answer this question asked by a Māori learner, whose analysis of COL achievement challenges found that 99% targeted Māori boys’ writing? Recent research has exposed “unsolicited” and “surprising” comments from children about the racism they experience as learners, and the Ministry of Education is advocating that a “bold step” is required to tackle teachers’ “unconscious bias” against Māori children. With a 73% Pākehā, 73% female, teaching workforce, the gap between our knowledge and the lives of the children we need to make the biggest changes for, is the crucial space that our professional development needs to target. How do we change this?
